Sony comments on Spider-Man leaving the Marvel film universe

Will Marvel Studios and Sony Entertainment stop working together on Spider-Man movies? By Tuesday, the future of your friendly Spider-Man neighborhood seemed bleak. A statement sent to CNET seems to confirm that the problem is centered on the involvement of Marvel's top producer Kevin Feige in future Spider-Man movies.

Deadline announced that a high-level dispute between the two companies meant that Marvel Studios' president, Feige, would no longer produce Spider-Man movies, and that Marvel would no longer be involved in the world of Spidey movie.

Marvel did not return a request for comment. A Sony representative suggested that the problem concerned production credits. Sources say the negotiations are underway.

More recently, in a statement sent to CNET, a Sony representative confirmed that Disney's reluctance to make Feige a producer for Sony's Spider-Man movies was an important part of the problem.

"Most of today's news on Spider-Man has misinterpreted recent discussions about Kevin Feige's involvement in the franchise," the spokesman said. "We are disappointed, but respect Disney's decision not to let him continue to play the lead role in our upcoming Spider-Man movie."

Feige is the producer often regarded as the mastermind behind the massive success of the Marvel film universe.

The Sony representative echoed these comments, saying that Sony was "grateful for his help and advice and appreciated the path that he had helped us to follow and that we will continue."

The Sony representative also said that he hoped things would "change in the future".

There are two more films planned with Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. It's possible that your average fan will not notice any difference between these two movies and Spider-Man: far from home and Spider-Man: Homecoming, both made as part of the Sony-Marvel deal.
