Sony confirmed on Monday that PlayStation Store access for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable will end this summer. PS3 and PS Vita stores close on August 27, 2021; the remaining purchasing functions of the PSP will end on July 2, 2021.
PS3, Vita, and PSP owners will still be able to redownload and play any games they have purchased through PlayStation Store. Users can still use promotional codes for games and PlayStation Plus.
In addition, cross-platform purchases are still possible, which means that users can still purchase content made available on both PlayStation 4 and PS3, PS Vita and / or PSP. Players can still access their content through the download list, on their respective device.
Sony also clarified that these store closures would not affect users’ PlayStation Now subscription, or their access to PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita titles they claimed through their PlayStation Plus subscription. These can still be downloaded again as long as their PlayStation Plus subscription remains up to date. The last month of the PlayStation Plus PS3 and PS Vita titles was February 2019.
But all new purchases are now complete. This applies to the purchase of any new game or video content, as well as in-game purchases, on PS3, PS Vita or PSP. As a result, players can no longer use these gift cards either; any money left in a user’s PSN wallet can only be used to purchase content for PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.
For those who want a refund of the remaining PSN Wallet funds after store access is closed, Sony will issue refunds and provide more information on the subsequent request.
Sony has more information in the FAQ posted Monday afternoon. Last week, reports said the PlayStation Store shutdown for all three legacy platforms was imminent. The PS3 went out of production in 2017, the Vita was discontinued in March 2019, and the PlayStation Portable was discontinued in 2014.
