Sony has added a surprise PS5 remote play app on PS4

Sony has added the ability for PlayStation 4 users to stream a PlayStation 5 console through Remote Play.

The PS5 Remote Play app appeared on the PS4 system menu this morning, apparently without any fanfare from Sony. As with the standard PlayStation Remote Play app, it allows users to remotely connect to and control a PS5 over the internet.

The app will apparently allow PlayStation users to play next-gen content on their last-gen console in a separate room or location.

At the time of publication, VGC was unable to use the feature with a PS5 preview.

To connect a PS4 console to a PS5, gamers must activate the remote play feature from the system menu of the new console, then automatically discover it over Wi-Fi or enter a provided code.

The app would presumably allow users to play PlayStation 5 games using a DualShock 4 controller, which the next-gen console itself does not allow. Currently, the PS5 DualSense controller also does not work with the PS4.

However, DualShock 4 will work with PlayStation 4 games on PS5 via backward compatibility, Sony said in a recent blog post. Specialized peripherals, such as racing wheels, arcade sticks, and officially licensed flight sticks, will work with PS5 games.

Last month, Sony revamped the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile, PC and Mac, changing its name to PS Remote Play and adding the option to connect to PS5 when it launched.

The PS5 release date is November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, with the rest of the world getting the console on November 19.

The release date for PlayStation 5 accessories – including DualSense – was recently brought forward to October 30 in the US and November 12 in the UK.

Sony confirmed Thursday that all PS5 sales at launch will be online only, with no units available in stores on November 12.
