Although Spider-Man has had some of its most successful cinema releases as part of Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fact remains that the cinematographic rights to the character belong to Sony, rather than to the parent company of Marvel Studios, Disney. A dispute between the studios over the financing of future Spidey films led this week to the rumor that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige would no longer serve as a producer for future Spider-Man films. Now, Sony has commented directly on the issue, expressing disappointment at the situation while acknowledging Feige's contributions.
In a series of tweets, Sony claimed that many reports on the conflict had "misinterpreted" discussions between studios. The statement focuses on Feige's involvement, but clearly places the responsibility for the decision for him not to be involved with Disney. It also clearly refers to "the IP that they do not own," pointing out that, ultimately, Spider-Man is owned by Sony with respect to movies. Check out the tweets below:
Most of today 's news on Spider – Man have misinterpreted recent discussions about Kevin Feige' s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney's decision not to let him continue as the lead producer of our upcoming Spider-Man movie. (1/3)

We hope this will change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has entrusted to him – including all newly added Marvel properties – leave him no time to work on an intellectual property that does not belong to them. (2/3)

Kevin is great and we are grateful for his help and advice and we appreciate the path he has helped us follow and we will continue. (3/3)

Sony's tweets follow the comments the studio originally made at io9, in which it stated that negotiations between the two parties were still ongoing and that the problem was whether Feige had received a producer credit for the films.
The big question remains as to the future of Spider-Man and the MCU. Spider-Man: Far From Home marked the official end of MCU Phase 3, paving the way for what would come from the film universe. Feige being more involved, it is possible that the Spider-Man franchise exists in place of the MCU. Sony has already built a non-MCU Spider-Man universe through Venom's film adaptation, as well as in the upcoming Morbius movie, in which Jared Leto plays the role of living vampire holder. Sources told Deadline that there were already two other films planned for Spider-Man, in which the role of the web slinger was Tom Holland, and director Jon Watts should return.
The situation could still change and the two studios could hear each other. The deadline, however, noted that it would take something "dramatic" for this to happen. For now, an extended outing of Spider-Man: Far From Home will be in the theater from August 29th. The Disney D23 will also take place this weekend and could bring more information on the future of the MCU, although it seems highly unlikely that Spider-Man will be a part of this conversation when l & # 39; event.
