Sony is dropping all PS4 models apart from a slim type in Japan

You can only get 500 GB Jet Black now

It begins!

Like all major hardware purges, Sony starts with Japan. It happened with the Vita, and now it’s going to happen with the PS4.

As reported by Game Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will phase out all PS4 Pro models and all but one PS4 Slim model. In short, the only PS4 that will be actively sold in Japan by Sony will be the PS4 slim 500 GB Jet Black model. As Gematsu points out, the PS4 “OG” has already been discontinued.

Although the PS4 had a fantastic run, hitting 113.5 million units and counting (placing it squarely in the top five of the list of best-selling consoles of all time, just above the PlayStation of origin), Sony is obviously looking to the future here.

There are a lot of considerations when it comes to hardware, like physical retail shelf space, as well as manufacturing issues and overhead. Sony must meet the demand for PS5 and put the material in everyone’s hands; and get out of an era of PS5 “lotteries” and chaos. For Sony, it’s the start of a new era. For PlayStation fans and collectors, this is the end of one.
