Bungie's plans to allow the transfer of Destiny characters across platforms have been halted by Sony, according to Jason Schreier of Kotaku.
Schreier made this statement in a recent episode of the Splitscreen podcast (skip to about 57 minutes if you want to jump directly to this topic – thanks, ResetEra). In a discussion of the results of Destiny 2 after Bungie's separation from longtime publishing partner, Activision, Schreier explained that even though Bungie had been keen to make character transfer a reality, her exclusive partnership with Sony prevented developer to continue.
"I've heard that Bungie wanted to do character transfers for PS4, PC – before the release of Forsaken – but Sony did not allow it," Schreier said. "Sony is just like, we want people to associate Destiny with PS4, even if it means emptying other players.
"It sucks and I hope Bungie will end it."
This is not the first time that Sony is chosen to fight cross-play, of course. A few years ago, it was Rocket League and Minecraft that highlighted the problem, and Sony did not want to move, although Sony director Shawn Layden told Eurogamer that the company "was considering a lot of possibilities." Barely a month later, a beta version of the crossover game has finally been delivered to Fortnite players on PlayStation 4.
It is natural to think that Bungie could revisit these plans now that the studio has terminated its partnership with Activision prematurely, but its agreement with Sony is apparently still in place. Just this week, Destiny 2 players on PC and Xbox One could have their paws on Wavesplitter, an exclusive PlayStation 4, but the studio had to revoke access via a "hotfix". Now, PC and Xbox One owners will see it stuck in inventory until the expiration of its exclusivity period in September 2019.
