Sony sees progress towards second-generation VR games

Shawn Layden of Sony said the VR industry was starting to move to the second generation of content.

Layden said this during his speech at this year's DICE conference. He began by saying that it was too early for the new technology, adding that "much of virtual reality is just one point and is still experimental."

But these experiences lay the foundation for the sequel. "We are starting to see progress toward software and VR 2.0 games," said Layden. He then spoke of a very popular example of making virtual reality games: Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Sony's exclusive 2018 PSVR platform game in Japan has stolen the hearts of people with its captivating gameplay and inventive use of virtual reality.

"Astro Bot used virtual reality support to redefine what could be a platform game, and very well," Layden said. "A game of this quality, which comes in the first generation of a new technology, helps us build the foundation that everyone can build on."

Indeed, we loved Astro Bot. But, like Layden, we are eager to see what games are built on the model he has established. PSVR is almost three years old now and we hope that the 2019 content list will be the strongest to date. We know that Sony London Studio is working on Blood And Truth, but we did not know what else would happen to the headphones this year.

Of course, we are also excited to see what will be the next step for PSVR. In an interview earlier this week, Layden said the changes seen in headphones over the next decade would be dramatic.
