CES 2021 doesn’t officially kick off until next week, but Sony has decided to tease some of its new range of displays on YouTube ahead of its much-anticipated press conference on Monday.
Sony’s upcoming B-series and C-series displays are modular MicroLED models from the company’s mega-expensive pro Crystal LED line. If you’re looking to replace your 43in, look away now: these are huge, high-end sets meant for professional installations or very wealthy people after serious screens.
MicroLED is cutting edge technology with all the advantages of OLED TVs and none of the disadvantages. As with OLED, each pixel is self-emitting, so one can be completely black while those next to it can be bright white or a vibrant color. MicroLEDs can also get brighter than OLEDs. The promise: an incredible contrast. MicroLEDs are also inorganic, so they won’t degrade or suffer from image retention or burnout.
These new displays incorporate technology from some of the company’s mainstream televisions, such as its X1 video processor, MotionFlow for advanced motion processing, and 22-bit Super Bit Mapping for smoother gradations.
We’re also looking at 1,800 nits of brightness, which is right under Samsung’s claims with its recently unveiled microLED TV. Sony’s models also feature a wide color gamut, 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, HDR, 120 fps frame rate, and 3D technology.
The C series promises “high contrast with a deep black coating”, while the B series offers “high brightness with an anti-reflective coating”. Full details are expected at CES next week, when the company is expected to reveal details of its much more user-friendly OLED and LCD TVs for 2021.
Samsung is also showcasing its very first out-of-the-box MicroLED TV, among many more in its just announced 2021 TV lineup. But like Sony, don’t expect it to be cheap.
