Just ahead of next week’s virtual CES, Sony Electronics announced a pair of new modular Crystal LED direct-view displays for business applications, including virtual production – an area that has seen renewed interest over the past year. the past year and has been used on projects of Midnight sky at The Mandalorian.
Sony draws attention to the C series for its high contrast ratio and the B series for emphasizing high brightness. Sony reports that the B-Series was developed in conjunction with Sony Pictures Entertainment to reflect the needs of production. For example, it has an anti-reflective coating with a matte finish, with an eye on virtual sets.
Both series are equipped with the Sony “X1 for Crystal LED” processor and incorporate the same Crystal LED technology as that used in its Bravia televisions. Features include the ability to display high dynamic range images, high frame rates of up to 120 frames per second, and stereoscopic 3D. They are also fanless, for quieter operation.
A virtual production environment using the tech giant’s current display technology (which was initially unveiled for additional uses, including digital cinema) sits at the digital media production center of Sony, a company based in Los Angeles for filmmakers. This setup was presented in the Sony exhibit a year ago at CES 2020.
The new Crystal LED C and B series should be available this summer. The price has not been announced.
