For all the amazing work Samsung has done handing out Android 11 goodies to a whole bunch of new and old high-end smartphones across the world in recent weeks, the heavyweight champion of major software updates has yet to do the same for its top mid-rangers.
This makes Sony’s latest OS promotion quite special, heading towards the mid-range Xperia 10 II as we speak in some countries in Southeast Asia. While we obviously cannot compare the sizes of the mobile product portfolios of these two companies, it is certainly impressive to see this 6-inch device released in 2020 with Snapdragon 665 processing power following in the footsteps of the high-end. Of course, Sony promised nearly two months ago to start delivering these goodies live to this device “from the end of January 2021,” but we’ve seen so many Android device vendors break that kind of promise so many times. over the years. that it is almost surprising that a company follows through without any delay.
Similar to the four other Android 11 updates rolled out to Xperia phones so far, the latest collection of UI tweaks, performance enhancements, and security enhancements tips the scales at less than 1 GB. This means Sony keeps its proprietary optimizations to a minimum, which appeals to so-called purists who for some reason aren’t happy with any Pixel-branded hardware that Google makes and sells directly.
Speaking of sales, it should be remembered that last year Xperia 10 II was never officially released in the US, unlike the original from 2019 Xperia 10. This Snapdragon 630-powered 6-inch oldie, by the way, is likely to be next in line for an OTA Android 11 upgrade, although we don’t yet know when Sony might pull that off.
Meanwhile, the Xperia 10 III may well see the light of day at some point by the end of next month with Android 11 presumably running the software, as well as the same old 6-inch extra-tall screen in tow and three definitely improved cameras slapped on the back.
