Just a few months ago, Sony announced its new Bravia XR TV line for 2021, featuring OLED and LCD models. Several high-end models will include an XR cognitive processor that attempts to mimic how your brain processes images by monitoring each frame of the video and selecting the most important areas to optimize.
Now new TVs are starting to ship including its 65-inch Bravia XR Master Series A90J OLED with the new chip inside. OLED’s incredible black levels and advanced AI processing won’t come cheap, as the sticker price starts at $ 3,999 (Amazon, Best Buy), though the 55-inch model is a slightly cheaper at $ 2,998 (Best Buy, Amazon). Sure, for that price you could get the 65-inch OLED from last year (Amazon, Best Buy), but without the bloated processor and other upgrades.
If you don’t feel like using OLED, there are cheaper LCD models available in the X80J line with standard (but still well regarded) image processing from Sony, 4K, Android TV and even the streaming service. Very high quality Bravia Core streaming. The 55-inch version costs $ 950 (Amazon, Best Buy) while the 65-inch version is available for $ 1,149 (Best Buy).
One thing to know about the new TVs is that they include HDMI 2.1 functionality, but just like the 2020 models, gamers will have to wait for my favorite: VRR. The variable refresh rate is available through Xbox consoles and PC graphics cards, but not the PS5 at this time, and it keeps the display in sync with system output to eliminate tearing and stuttering. When it works properly, it’s amazing, and Sony has said it will happen to these TVs in a future software update, but hasn’t set a deadline.
