Sony’s new PS5 digital edition for Japan is mysteriously two-thirds of a pound lighter

Sony detectives just stumbled upon a surprise in Japan: The company quietly released a new version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition which is listed as 300 grams lighter than the original (via power supply). That’s two-thirds of a pound, bringing back the gigantic console from Much more the eight-pound mark just slightly below.

How, you might ask? Well, that’s the question!

According to Sony Official Manual (PDF) and Quick Start Guide (PDF) as shown by PS5sokuhouInfo on Twitter, the only the differences between the new CFI-1100B and the original CFI-1000B is the change in weight and a new thumbscrew for the vertical stand of the PS5, so you don’t need a screwdriver or a part of change to settle it.

It’s not as if the console has lost girth: Sony documentation shows that it has the exact same dimensions. So what could have changed? The system has a powerful internal power supply, a giant heatsink, and plenty of shielding, which comes to mind, but we’ll have to wait for another teardown to be sure. Or maybe it’s just a typo. For context, the fat-packed PS5 with the disk drive weighs just under 10 pounds.

The new version is already listed with Japanese retailers and will be marketed at the end of July, according to PS5sokuhouInfo.
