You no longer have to spend over $ 200 on a pair of quality Active Noise Reduction (ANC) headphones. If you don’t mind settling for a slightly older model, we highly recommend the Sony WH-1000XM3. Weeks after dropping to $ 190, wireless headphones fell another $ 20 at Best Buy to hit a new low of $ 170.

We gave the XM3 a rating of 94 in September 2018 because of its excellent sound and comfort. Inside is a dedicated noise canceling chip, the QN1, which does the heavy lifting in terms of blocking out background noise and amplifying the sound. For those not used to ANC, you might even notice some new sounds on the tracks you like. Audiophiles will also benefit from the personalization offered by the Sony app that lets you fine-tune the sound.

We would be remiss if we did not mention the successors of the XM3, the XM4. The new headphones feature two major additions: auto-pause and seamless multi-device listening. That’s not much of a compromise considering they currently cost $ 348.

The design of the XM3 is also a public delight. The on-ear headphones are in black with bronze accents on the Sony logo and USB-C Harbor. In our testing, we found that the plush padding around the pads and headband was significantly more comfortable than some of the alternatives. You can also fold them up when not in use, making them perfect for travel. The XM3 offers around 30 hours of battery life, more than enough for regular commuters. A well-powered USB-C connection also provides five hours of charging after just 10 minutes.
