The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was forced to cancel the rest of its convention at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans on Friday. Because of that, there remained more than 17,000 meals.
The sorority organizers worked with Centerplate Food Services – which is responsible for the restoration of the convention center – and with a local chef to have food recovered by Second Harvest Food Bank before the storm.
Second Harvest Food said they would pack meals in a 20,000 square foot cooler over the weekend and then deliver them to storm victims, shelters, first responders and others. people once the storm is over.
The wind and rain of tropical storm Barry began hitting parts of Louisiana early Friday as New Orleans and coastal communities were about to drink from what should be the first hurricane of the season.
A hurricane warning was in effect along the coast of Louisiana, and forecasters said the storm could land as a hurricane by early Saturday.
