Sorry, but sets is dead

Citing several sources, Mary Jo Foley says that Microsoft has quietly canceled its intention to add sets to Windows 10.

As you may remember, Microsoft announced Sets late 2017 and originally planned to release this feature (which would have added a tab-based shell around application windows) as part of A version 2018 of Windows 10. But after briefly testing Sets, Microsoft has extracted versions prior to Windows 10 and has never since mentioned it in an official title. We know that it will not be included in Windows 10 version 1903, which has just been completed because it has never been tested as part of this release.

But last week, Sets fans had a bit of hope when a Microsoft program manager said on Twitter that "adding tabs is a priority [Microsoft’s] "to-do list" despite the sets not being included in Windows 10 version 1903. At the time, I speculated that the delay had to do with Microsoft's transition from its Web Edge browser to the Google codebase. Chromium: "Sets was based on the functionality of the tabs in Classic, and since Microsoft is abandoning this product, it would have to start all over again.

This speculation has been confirmed: Foley sources say that the transition from Edge to Chromium "made it possible to finalize the decision to [cancel] Sets. It would have been too tedious to reimplement the feature using Chromium.

Foley is less positive about whether sets, or something, will ever come into Windows 10.

"The Windows 10" Bundles "feature is gone and should not come back, she writes. In addition, "the functionality was not generally well understood or understood", which indicates that it is unlikely that the sets will be replaced by the entire system.

In the news service, tabbed user interfaces make seems to be coming to future versions of File Explorer, the Windows 10 file management application, and the Windows 10 console applications. This should address the most common needs for package-like features and avoid the problems that Traditional users might come across with the tab view in Windows.

RIP, sets. Like so many ideas from Microsoft, it seemed like you had a future. And then you did not do it.
