Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor botched the pronunciation of Kamala Harris’s name on Wednesday as she was sworn in as the country’s next vice president – and the Twittersphere was quick to pounce on the mistake.
While administering the oath of office – “Me, Kamala Devis Harris…” – Sotomayor emphasized the second syllable of Kamala, rather than the first.
Harris, 56, repeated the oath, but with the correct pronunciation of his name, emphasizing Kamala’s first syllable.
“So, at this historic moment and the greatest achievement in this woman’s career, Sotomayor mispronounces Vice President Kamala Harris’ name,” one Twitter user wrote.
“tfw sotomayor mispronounces your name when you swear in,” wrote another.
“Oooof. Sotomayor mispronounces Kamala’s first name. How is it?” read another tweet.

The error evoked the memory of former President Barack Obama’s first inauguration when Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts accidentally ruled the 35-word oath inadmissible.
To dispel any doubt that the error invalidated the Obama presidency, he and Roberts held an additional swearing-in ceremony the next day without any errors. It was not immediately clear whether Harris or Sotomayor would make a similar move.

Harris made history Wednesday as the country’s first female vice president – and the first black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the post.
