Pixar’s Soul continued the studio’s tradition of mounting its next film by including a 2021 Luca teasing Easter egg.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Soul, now available on Disney +.

Pixar has a tradition of including Easter eggs in its films that set up the studio’s next film, such as when a toy version of Nemo from The world of Nemo appeared in Boo’s room Monsters Inc. and Toy story 3 Villainous Lots-o’-Huggin ‘Bear appeared in a child’s room To the top. The studio’s latest film, Soul, is no exception, including an Easter egg for the 2021 Luca.

the Luca The Easter egg appears at approximately 57:39 in Soul, at which point 22 accidentally entered Joe Gardner’s body as he put it in the body of a therapy cat named Mr. Mittens. As the duo walk down a New York street, as part of Joe’s larger shot to straighten things out and restore themselves to his real body, the duo go through a travel agency, which in itself seems a bit quaint ( especially for a movie released in 2020). There’s a poster in the window that reads “Visit Portorosso,” a reference to Luca’s last name in the upcoming Pixar movie.

Pixar's Soul Luca Easter Egg

Announced in July 2020, Luca takes place in a picturesque seaside town on the Italian Riviera, where a young boy named Luca Portorosso spends his summer embarking on all kinds of adventures with his new best friend Alberto. However, Alberto is truly a sea monster from a world deep under the ocean and only appears human on land. Docuseries episode 2 Inside Pixar on Disney + offered a preview of Alberto’s sea monster form, which appears to have been inspired by the creature from the Black Lagoon and The shape of water‘s Amphibian Man.

24th Pixar film, Luca was written by Jesse Andrews (Me and Earl and the dying girl) and Soul co-author Mike Jones. It also marks the directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa, who was a screenwriter on Pixar. Ratatouille and To the top before directing the studio’s Oscar-nominated short film in 2011 The moon. Casarosa grew up on the Italian Riviera and described Luca as a “deeply personal story”, as well as a tale about the meaning of childhood friendships and how they “often determine who we want to be a filmmaker said. .

Friendships, like the one between Luca and Alberto, have been a central part of Pixar films since Woody met Buzz in the first Toy story and have continued to appear throughout the studio’s films ever since, be it Mike and Sulley in Monsters Inc., Carl and Russell in To the top, or even joy and sadness Upside down. That remained the case with Soul, who twins 22 with Joe on an adventure that allows them to learn more not just about themselves, but the meaning of existence itself. It would have been fair, then, to Soul To tease Luca and his own story of surprising buddies, even if it hadn’t been a Pixar custom.

Directed by Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren, Luca arrives in US theaters on June 18, 2021.
