The Cleveland Browns have accepted the terms of the contract with security veteran Morgan Burnett, a league source said Friday.
A source told Josina Anderson of ESPN that the agreement is expected to last two years.
The Browns also surrendered to the late AAF for quarter depth, which is consistent with Garrett Gilbert, the source said.
Burnett will compete with recently acquired Eric Murray to address a security need following Jabrill Peppers' deal with Odell Beckham Jr.
Gilbert is an interesting rookie given the quirky nature of the FAA, a development league that ceased operations on April 2nd. At a minimum, he provides the third arm needed in OTA and minicamp, and at best he could compete with Drew Stanton for Baker Mayfield. Gilbert and Mayfield both attended Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas.
The Browns had taken the position that Stanton would be a capable reinforcement; Gilbert provides an option, if he works. In eight games with Steve Spurrier's attack in the AAF game, Gilbert scored for 1,842 yards with 11 touchdowns. Orlando went 7-1 in his debut.
Gilbert's career in the NFL has not been so successful. In 2014, he was a choice among the St. Louis Rams for the sixth round and played for New England, Detroit, Oakland and Carolina, where he had played in a match before being released.
Burnett became a free agent when the Pittsburgh Steelers released him on April 1, at the request of his agent.
The Steelers signed with Burnett, who turned 30 in January, a three-year deal worth $ 14.25 million last year, with a signing bonus of $ 4.25 million. Burnett played eight seasons for the Green Bay Packers before hitting a free goal.
He missed four of the first six games of the 2018 season due to an injury, and the Steelers continued to train rookie Terrell Edmunds in his absence.
Burnett recorded 30 tackles and six passing passes in a sub-package role over 11 games. Edmunds and third-year player Sean Davis held the two starting safety spots for the season.
Burnett told NFL Network during the off season that he wanted to be released because he wanted to play security instead of being linebacker. The Steelers have hired free agent Mark Barron as the starting linebacker, who can also play Burnett in the dime package.
Burnett started the 102 games he competed for the Packers and had nine interceptions, 44 defended passes, 7.5 sacks and 717 tackles while in Green Bay.
