ASHBURN, Va. – Washington Redskins midfielder Derrius Guice has had a knee surgery to repair his right meniscus. He will miss six to eight weeks, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.
The injury creates an opportunity for Adrian Peterson to start just one week after being inactive for the opening game of the season.
Guice tore his meniscus in Sunday's 32-27 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins initially hoped that he would miss only a few weeks, but the knee did not improve in the days that followed.
He was then examined by Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation.

Wednesday, Gruden had announced that Peterson would play against the Dallas Cowboys if Guice was running out of time. In two games against the Cowboys last season, Peterson racked up 24 wins for 99 yards in the win and 12 times for 35 yards in the loss.
Guice has now suffered a knee injury in two of the three games that he has played in Washington. he tore his left ACL during the opening game of the 2018 pre-season. This summer, he managed the third pre-season game without any problems.

In college, he hyperextended his right knee while playing for LSU.
Guice carried the ball 10 times for 18 yards against the Eagles on Sunday.
Gruden turned off Peterson in the first game, the first time he was a healthy inactive during his 13-year career. The Redskins have generally kept only three halves in action. Because they had planned to use only Guice and the third, Chris Thompson, Gruden wanted the third back on special teams – that's why Wendell Smallwood was active on Peterson.
But the movement surprised many players.
"There are not a lot of Pantheon members walking around on your football team," said Morgan Moses after the match. "I congratulate him because it 's probably harder for him than to be able to sit on the sidelines, but we obviously think he' s a hell of a football player and that 's what he is doing. he still has a lot of juice, let's hope it's just a weekly thing and we can move on. "
Peterson started 16 games with Washington last season, totaling 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns. He is eighth on the list of ground running records with 13,318 yards and tied for fifth with 106 touchdowns.
After Sunday's defeat, when asked why he had made Peterson inactive, Gruden said, "If we think we can run the ball 55 times in an I-formation match, then I'll pick it up." . "
But Wednesday, Gruden said: "Adrian is a professional and I feel very good.If his number is called this week, he will be ready to play very hard.It will be Adrian Peterson."
