It took a few hours, but now we know what the Warriors will send to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Kelly Oubre.
The Warriors are in the process of finalizing a trade that would send a 2021 protected first-round pick to the Thunder for the forward, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole confirmed Thursday night.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported details about the draft pick the Warriors trade to the Thunder.
The Warriors will only send the Thunder first round pick if they finish with one of the NBA’s 10 worst records.
If Golden State finishes with one of the league’s top 20 records, it will send two future second-round picks to Oklahoma City.
As Poole noted, it’s highly unlikely that the Warriors will send a first-round pick to the Thunder. A lot would have to go wrong this season for that to happen.
Wojnarowski broke the news around 2 p.m. PT that the Warriors were close to making a deal to acquire Oubre from the Thunder and absorb it using their $ 17.2 million trade exception created by Andre Iguodala’s trade in Memphis last year.
Oubre is expected to earn $ 14.4 million in the 2020-2021 NBA season. By accepting the Oubre contract, the Warriors’ luxury tax bill will drop from $ 66 million to $ 134 million, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
The Warriors were prepared to pay a heavy price for Oubre because of Klay Thompson’s ripped right Achilles suffered Wednesday. They didn’t expect to have a hole in the starting lineup, but the devastating injury changed their plans.

Oubre will likely be part of the Warriors’ starting lineup along with Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and James Wiseman.
Oubre is not Thompson. Very few NBA players can match the impact of the NBA All-Star. But the future 25-year-old wing averaged 18.7 points per game last season and should be a perfect match for what the Warriors want to do.
