Sources – Baylor Bears exiting Empire Classic basketball tournament, Arizona State Sun Devils returning

Less than 24 hours after Arizona State retired from the Empire Classic, the Sun Devils are back – with Baylor dropping the event.

Arizona state had planned to pull out on Sunday night, sources told ESPN, after the news that Baylor coach Scott Drew had tested positive for COVID-19. The Bears were still planning to play against the Sun Devils in the flagship college basketball opening night game on Wednesday. According to sources, however, Arizona state medical protocols did not allow them to play at Baylor, although Drew was the only member of the program to test positive on Friday or Sunday.

As questions arise as to whether Villanova and Boston College – the other two Empire Classic teams – could play at Baylor, plans have changed.

Baylor is no longer traveling to Mohegan Sun for the tournament, sources told ESPN, while Arizona State left for the Connecticut casino on Monday morning.

The Sun Devils had planned to travel to Mohegan on Monday anyway, even though they were no longer part of the Empire Classic. Mohegan Sun hosts a number of events and tournaments in the first two weeks of college basketball season, and Arizona State could have found multiple opponents.

The fourth team of the Empire Classic remains to be determined.

Baylor are now set to open their season at Seton Hall on Sunday, but it’s unclear if this game will go as planned.
