Sources – Bridgewater is a good start for the saints

Teddy Bridgewater will be starting quarterback of the New Orleans Saints for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, sources told Dianna Russini of ESPN.

During the week, coach Sean Payton had refused to name a starter, explaining that Bridgewater and dual threat athlete Taysom Hill would play at the quarterback. That's still what we expect, but Bridgewater will be the first QB, sources told Russini.

Bridgewater will replace the long-time quarterback of Saints Drew Brees, who had surgery on his right thumb on Wednesday.

There is no official timetable for the recovery of Brees, but league sources said Monday to Adam Schefter of ESPN that it could be ruled out about six weeks ago. The Saints did not place Brees in the reserve of the wounded, which would force him to miss eight weeks.

Bridgewater, a 2014 first-round pick that led the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs in 2015 before a devastating knee injury in the summer of 2016, is the NFL's highest-paid reserve quarterback.

He was 17-to-30 for 165 yards with no touchdowns or interception in relief from Brees in Sunday's 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Mike Triplett of ESPN contributed to this report.
