Sources – Green Bay Packers are waiting to decide if CB star Jaire Alexander needs end-of-season surgery

The Green Bay Packers have placed Jaire Alexander on the injured list with a sprained AC joint, but the star cornerback’s absence could extend well beyond a few weeks.

Doctors are expected to decide over the next two weeks whether Alexander, one of the NFL’s top defensive players, will miss several weeks or the rest of the season, sources told ESPN.

Alexander has already asked several doctors to review his shoulder test results, and further opinions are expected over the next two weeks before a decision is made, a source told ESPN. Doctors want to see both the test results and how well Alexander’s shoulder heals over a short period of time.

If Alexander needs surgery, which remains a possibility, his season would be over, which would be a major loss for the Green Bay defense.

Besides the physical component, there is also a financial component that plays into Alexander’s future. He’s currently in the fourth year of a five-year contract, and Alexander and the Packers want a long-term deal as soon as possible. The deal is set to be one of the richest contracts ever awarded to a cornerback.

Alexander, 24, was injured making a tackle in Green Bay’s Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 2020 Pro Bowler will miss at least three games after being placed in IR on Saturday.

“It’s just one of those things that we’re going to let heal and see where it goes before we make that decision,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said on Friday. “But we hope it heals the right way and that he will be back with us in a few weeks.”
