Sources – Kenyon Martin Jr. to avoid college, become pro

Kenyon Martin Jr., son of former NBA forward Kenyon Martin, is going to jump out of college looking for professional basketball opportunities, sources at ESPN have confirmed.

Martin is committed to Vanderbilt early May and signed a letter of national intent on May 15th. He was scheduled to arrive on campus this week, but he informed Vanderbilt coaching staff earlier this week that he was considering exploring professional options, sources told ESPN.

The first five recruits, R.J. Hampton announced at the end of May that he would avoid university studies and signed a professional contract with the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League in Australia. Hampton's announcement of not attending college influenced Martin's decision, sources told ESPN.

Martin, a three-star striker from Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif., Does not appear to have signed a professional contract at this stage. He averaged 16.7 points and 9.8 rebounds for Sierra Canyon last season.

Martin played alongside Scotty Pippen Jr. – son of the NBA Hall of Fame – with the core program of Sierra Canyon School and Oakland Soldiers, and Pippen also signed a contract with Vanderbilt in the 2019 recruiting category. Pippen is arrived on campus earlier this week.

Vanderbilt earned a score of 0 to 18 in a game against the SEC last season and sacked his coach Bryce Drew shortly after the end of his campaign. The Commodores replaced Drew by Jerry Stackhouse, two NBA stars, who played for 18 seasons in the NBA before spending four seasons as a coach in the NBA and D-League.
