Censorship formally condemns Rice for his surprise vote to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the violent mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6, resulting in the deaths of several people.
The party noted that the resolution berating Rice was launched at the grassroots level in a county in her district and the impeachment vote took place as Trump stepped down.
“Trying to impeach a president, with a week left in his term, is never legitimate and is nothing more than a political kick in the way of the door,” said Drew McKissick, the president of the South Carolina GOP. “Congressman Rice’s vote unfortunately played well into the Democrats’ game, and the people of his district, and ultimately our state executive committee, wanted him to know that they totally disagreed with his decision.

A spokesperson for Rice did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
The no-confidence resolution comes with no tangible punishment, but the vote marks a rebuke to a sitting lawmaker from his own party. The move also underlines the risks Republicans are still taking by going against the former president, who remains popular with the GOP base.
The South Carolina Republican Party last censored a Republican over 10 years ago, when it voted to endorse a similar resolution for the then government. Rice is just the latest Republican to face this kind of backlash from his own party.

Still, Rice’s vote to impeach Trump came as a shock to Republicans given that he had not voiced his criticism of Trump throughout his four-year presidency and supported Trump’s campaigns in 2016 and 2020. He should now face a major challenge next year.
