The Troy game against South Carolina brought us one of the wackiest games you’ve ever seen.
Troy, led 20-14, had the ball in the red zone and was potentially looking to take the lead. Facing a third and 9 from South Carolina 18, Troy QB Taylor Powell fell back to pass but was pierced by a Gamecocks defenseman, who released the ball.
A defensive lineman from South Carolina picked up the loose ball, only to grope it himself. From there, another South Carolina player – defensive back Jahmar Brown – recovered that fumble and made it to the races.
Brown seemed to have an easy touchdown. But there was a problem. He threw the ball in the air in celebration before crossing the goal line.
The game was reviewed and made it clear that Brown has yet to enter the end zone. And because the ball bounced off the back of the end zone, the result of that crazy play was a touchdown, returning the ball to Troy on his own 20-yard line.
To recap, the game went as follows: Troy escaped, escaped South Carolina, escaped South Carolina, escaped South Carolina, escaped South Carolina, touchback.
Only in college football.
You would think college football players would learn not to do that too. This is something that has happened several times over the years. One of the most notable examples was the 2014 Oregon vs. Utah game.
Hold on to the ball in the end zone, folks!
