College football is the most captivating when it is the most chaotic. The 2007 season is often remembered as the year when entropy reigned, with results so unpredictable that at one point South Florida was ranked second. The 2021 campaign still has a ways to go to reach those heights of instability, but the first few weeks have been crazy enough that it’s possible that an equally erratic season is in store this year.
If you’re looking for a unique piece to capture the kind of anarchic energy described above, look no further than this piece from the South Carolina-Troy game.
To start the fourth quarter, Troy faced a critical third from inside the Gamecocks’ 20-yard line while being down 20-14. What happened next was … well, just run the tape:
It’s 2021, and somehow players always let go of the ball before they cross the goal line.
To recap: Jaylan Foster came out unscathed to save the blind side sack and let go of the ball. Damani Staley briefly took possession of the ball before groping himself, then Jahmar Brown picked it up and ran without touching towards the end zone. His giving up the ball before reaching the end zone was the most fitting end to one of the most ridiculous games of the season.
The fumble and touchback gave Troy back possession, but the South Carolina defense held on and forced a punt. The next two possessions resulted in fumbles by each team before the Gamecocks set up a placement campaign to build a nine-point lead, ultimately winning by a final score of 23-14.
This outcome will hopefully make the above abomination of a game something everyone can laugh at, but it’s safe to say that Brown (and every other player in South Carolina) will be educated on ball safety near the goal line in the future.
