South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg faces impeachment proceedings and requests his resignation on criminal charges related to a fatal hit-and-run.

Ravnsborg was charged with three misdemeanors last week after initially saying he believed he hit a deer, not a person. Pressure for his ouster intensified on Wednesday when it became public that the victim’s glasses had been found in Ravnsborg’s car.

“His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about it,” a detective told the AG during an interrogation on September 30, the video of which was released Tuesday.

The video came from South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who called for Ravnsborg’s resignation earlier today. Republicans in the state legislature also filed articles of impeachment on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Noem vowed she would release more documents surrounding the investigation, and the Republican household chairman outlined the next steps in the impeachment, which include forming a committee with ten lawmakers to investigate the matter. find out if driving is an impenetrable offense.

Notably, Noem and the lawmakers who filed the articles of impeachment are fellow Republicans, with Ravnsborg being elected to the post in 2018 after securing the convention nomination from the South Dakota GOP.

Investigative documents released in recent days have cast further doubt on Ravnsborg’s original story. Phone records show he logged into a Yahoo email account and visited news sites within minutes of calling 911, according to a compilation by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader newspaper.

After coming out of a meeting to announce the articles of impeachment on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Will Mortenson de Pierre said the attorney general should not go to jail, but should be held accountable.

“It’s not political and it’s not personal,” Mortenson said. “Again, I don’t believe Attorney General Ravnsborg belongs to the prison, but I know he no longer belongs to the Attorney General’s office.”
