South Dakota sets record for COVID-19 deaths on Saturday

South Dakota reported a record 54 people who died from COVID-19 on Saturday, with the Department of Health reporting 819 new cases.

There are now 17,106 active coronavirus cases in South Dakota. The 54 new deaths reported bring the total since the start of the pandemic to 942.

Thirty-one men and 23 women died, the health ministry said. Five deaths were in the 50-59 age group, 11 in the 60-69 age group and 13 were in the 70-79 age group. Twenty-five people over the age of 80 have died.

They were residents of Minnehaha (11), Codington (4), Pennington (4), Davison (4), Aurora (2), Buffalo (2), Day (2), Faulk (2), Jackson (2), Lincoln (2), Oglala Lakota (2), Roberts (2), Tripp (2), Turner (2), Union (2), Beadle, Brown, Charles Mix, Grant, Gregory, Hamlin, Hanson, Hutchinson and Walworth Counties.

Minnehaha County saw the largest increase in cases with 202 followed by Pennington (90), Yankton (45), Brown (44) and Lincoln (32), according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

The state reported that the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 declined by 30 in the last day. On Saturday, 539 people were hospitalized for COVID-19. Just over 38.5% of hospital beds are available in the state. There are only 18.1% of adult ICU beds available in the state.
