Kristen Schaal has had great success over the years with Flight of the Conchords, Bob’s Burgers, and other comedic hits. But few realize that she also had a brief stint as a writer on South Park in 2007, mostly because she was fired after just a month.
In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Schaal opened up about her stay in the South Park Writer’s Room, admitting that she was a little too eager to make a living. “I was throwing too much. I had never been to a writing room before. So I was like, let me make a living. I was like, ‘What about this? And that? And that?’ And that’s not how it works. “
Schaal says she entered the job as an established South Park fan, which added to her anxiety. “I mean, I’m a South Park fan. I think South Park is honestly one of the most underrated cultural shows. I think people have taken it for granted at this point. is such a force. And I grew up in Colorado, went to school at the University of Colorado for a year. So I was in awe.
It didn’t last long, however. “I was there for about a month and was told – I got a warning that I was talking too much.”
It didn’t help that South Park was big on movie parodies in 2007, and that she wasn’t a movie buff herself. “I couldn’t go, so I kept coming up with something else. So looking back, yeah, they let me go. I could do a writers room now, just for everyone who’s listening. , but I was too nervous and too excited to be in there. “
Everything went well in the end. Schaal says she has no grudges against creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, but says the news that she was fired was “devastating.” She would be very successful elsewhere, from appearances on The Daily Show to the role of Louise Belcher in Bob’s Burgers.
As for South Park, it’s still ongoing, with Stone and Parker signing a deal that will see it go through its 30th season. The duo will also be producing 14 new movies and a game.
