“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have struck a new deal with MTV entertainment studios ViacomCBS, which calls on the couple to produce 14 films for Paramount Plus based on the animated franchise Comedy Central.
The pact also renews “South Park” as a series for Comedy Central until its 30th season in 2027. Bloomberg News reported that the deal was valued at $ 900 million over a six-year period. That’s a stark figure, but it includes licensing fees and production overheads for 14 films and several additional seasons of the series via the couple’s Park County banner.
“Matt and Trey are world-class creators who brilliantly use their outrageous humor to confuse the absurdities of our culture and we’re excited to extend and deepen our long relationship with them to help power Paramount + and Comedy Central,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of MTV Entertainment and director of adult animation content for Paramount Plus. “The reputable content franchise like South Park and the development of new IPs with great talents like Matt and Trey are central to our strategy to continue to grow Paramount Plus. “
The new deal with Parker and Stone reflects the media majors’ pursuit of large-scale content deals with notable producers with high-powered properties. “South Park” has been a mainstay of Comedy Central since 1997. In 2019, ViacomCBS licensed the show’s older seasons to HBO Max in a $ 500 million deal. This deal raised eyebrows at the time given that ViacomCBS has its own streaming ambitions.
“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” said Parker and Stone. “When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way of producing the show during the pandemic, Chris (McCarthy), Nina (Diaz), Keyes (Hill-Edgar) and Tanya (Giles) immediately supported us and allowed us to ‘try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to pick up traditional South Park episodes, but now we can try new formats as well. It’s great to have partners who will always try their luck with us.
Parker, Stone, Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II are the executive producers of “South Park”. Parker and Stone have been replaced by Park County attorney Kevin Morris and Keith Pizzi.
