Liverpool pushed hard for the decisive goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Keita's cries of penalty were welcomed before Roberto Firmino escaped with a good chance to a player from Sadio Mane while the game passed one hour.

A good defense in a pair of corners in Southampton led to a stunning counterattack for Liverpool. Salah grabbed the ball from his side, walked the length of the court and finished at 18 yards to send the fans away in ecstasy to St Mary's.

The goal was a sweet relief for Salah, who has played eight games without scoring in all competitions, making him the fastest player in Liverpool to score 50 Premier League goals in just 69 appearances.

Jordan Henderson, who replaced Salah, replaced the debates by giving Firmino a close-range pass to give the visiting side a margin and send it to the top of the table.

The win brought Liverpool 82 points in 33 games, City in 80 points in Southampton, while Southampton remained five points over the relegation zone.
