Southern Charm star Kathryn Dennis addressed the controversial monkey emoji she sent to a Black South Carolina radio host in the latest episode of the Bravo series.
The scandal erupted in the spring, when Charleston radio host Tamika Gadsden tweeted her dismay at a Trump parade hosted by a friend of Kathryn’s, prompting the reality star to bombard her with private messages, including the monkey emoji.
In a phone conversation with costar Madison LeCroy, Kathryn admitted that she felt ‘super depressed’ in the weeks following the incident.

“ Honestly, I’ve been very depressed the past few weeks with everything that has happened with the Instagram emoji, ” Kathryn said.
“It was really a mistake and it had nothing to do with race, politics, nothing,” she added.
In a confessional, Kathryn recalled the events leading up to her interaction with Tamika, and insisted that she was simply trying to defend her friend.
“ My friend was having a Trump Parade Party and I’m not a political f ** king, I’m not a Trump fan, I’m not for anyone but they were intimidating her like, this woman was criticizing my friend Katie. So I started to answer. I don’t even remember what I said, but I know the monkey emoji did show up eventually.

Kathryn later apologized publicly to Tamika for the exchange, but the radio host refused to accept.

The scandal did not please many of Kathryn’s teammates, who then discussed Kathryn’s problematic behavior over lunch.
The women reflected on Catherine’s scandal and ambivalence over a statue of her ancestor, former Vice President John C. Calhoun.
Calhoun was pro-slavery, and Kathryn’s middle name is “Calhoun”.

“We had to make a statement. We fired her because we have to stand up for something and that’s clearly not it, ”Madison continued.
