Southwest Airlines cancels and delays hundreds of flights

DALLAS – Southwest Airlines continues to tackle problems on the tarmac, putting many planes out of service, canceling and delaying hundreds of flights.

Southwest Airlines apologizes to passengers for hundreds of cancellations and delays.

Southwest initially reported maintenance problems, but now attributes the problems to the mechanics' union.

On Friday, the airline ordered the state of operational emergency in order to ensure that the mechanics scheduled for the work enter the country, so that they can return the planes in the air.

The weather is also to blame for some cancellations.

Last week, the airline decommissioned more than 40 of its fleet of 750 aircraft and four sites in the southwest reported mechanical problems, impacts that resulted in delays and cancellations.

According to Flightaware, Southwest Airlines canceled 186 flights on Tuesday, representing about 4 percent of its operations.

A union representative said Southwest was scapegoating by blaming the mechanics' union for delays and cancellations because they had been stuck in wage and benefit negotiations for years.

Officials at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport said they were unaware of any impact, but the airline is currently in a situation of operational urgency.
