CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – SpaceX has launched 60 small satellites, the first of thousands of people whose founder, Elon Musk, plans to put global Internet coverage into orbit.

The recycled Falcon rocket took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday night. The first-stage propeller landed on an ocean platform, while the highly compacted satellite group continued to climb.

Musk said Friday that the 60 flat-screen satellites had been deployed and online a few hundred kilometers above the Earth. Each satellite weighs 227 kg.

The constellation in orbit – named Starlink – will expand.

According to Musk, 12 launches of 60 satellites each will provide broadband Internet coverage across the United States. Twenty-four launches will serve most populated countries and 30 launches worldwide. This will total 1,800 satellites, and more are planned thereafter.
