SpaceX successfully launches 60 satellites in orbit

SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket containing 60 satellites from Cape Canaveral in Florida on Thursday night.

The satellites, supposed to bring high-speed Internet to underserved communities, were deployed in low Earth orbit an hour later, according to Space News.

The launch is the first of many SpaceX efforts to create a mega global constellation of the Internet with one terabit per second of user capacity, reported Space News.

The launch was delayed by several weeks due to programming problems with the International Space Station.

SpaceX plans to perform three to seven launches this year with the goal of launching up to 12,000 satellites in the next few years, according to Space News.
