Speculation on backward compatibility of PS5 starts again as Sony files another patent

PS5 backward compatibility

Sony has filed another patented for an upward compatibility system, theoretically allowing the inevitable PS5 to play games from previous generations of the console. Earlier this month, a patent registered under the name of Mark Cerny was discovered, suggesting an upward compatibility method that would, again, in theory, allow the PS5 to use PSone, PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles.

The patent has generated a lot of speculation, but as we have mentioned, patents do not necessarily mean that the proposed technology will be used. Sometimes companies simply patent something to protect the idea from competition.

However, the fact that Sony filed another patent – released yesterday and again, written by PS4 system architect Mark Cerny – gives a lot of weight to the aforementioned speculation. Just like the latest patent, this one designs a system that "tries" in essence to make people think of old games by thinking that they are turning on their original platforms. This certainly seems to correspond to what has already been discovered.

We have already said, but if Sony can somehow quarrel full backward compatibility on PS5, it would be a sacred selling point. While we believe that compatibility with the PS4 is essential for the next generation, we will obviously have to wait and see how it all goes. Nevertheless, it is somewhat reassuring to know that the Japanese giant is considering at least its options.
