Just like the end of Iron Man, the rules have changed, agree. Which means now that we will have to do something completely different next time. The how and the when and the specifics can change and evolve, but you prepare for something that has never been done before … At the end of Iron Man, it was a hero who was publicly revealed so that in the next movies and all the following movies, we could not fall back on the secret identity that had been part of the Iron Man story for decades in comics.
There is a part of me that has been a little disappointed by this revelation. Peter Parker was the only superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a secret identity (although I suppose it is possible for the general public outside Wakanda to ignore that the king of the nation is the black panther). This element gave him something to protect, a challenge that no other superhero had to face in the MCU. But at the same time, it opens the way for a new type of story that Peter Parker never faced. Feige continued:
"And now, people know Peter's identity. People now think he's a bad guy. Mysterio plays him a last trick and succeeds … [so that] means everything is different. We will see where it goes. But it's exciting that once again it prepares us for a Peter Parker story that has never been filmed before. "
In addition to this aspect of Peter Parker's story, it seems that Marvel Studios has the potential to present a new villain on the big screen that the public has not seen yet. Director Jon Watts recently announced his interest in making Kraven the hunter an MCU for Spider-Man's third adventure. Curiously, the writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers think the same thing.
It turns out that a whole story called Kraven's "The Last Hunt" talks about the villain who tracks Spider-Man, and that it's one of Spider-Man's most famous comic arcs. It would be difficult to adapt this to the MCU, but it is not necessarily impossible. What makes Kraven's Last Hunt even more interesting for the movie franchise is that it shows Spider-Man wearing the Spidey black suit. This is something that would be an excellent fit for the eventual crossover with Venom Kevin Feige recently indicated was likely to happen at some point.
For the moment, we do not know when we will see Spider-Man return to the big screen. Given that Sony Pictures has some influence, we bet it will be as soon as possible, but it all depends on everything Marvel has planned for others over the next few years.
