With the finale Avengers: End of the game now in movie theaters, the next Marvel movie on the list is July Spider-Man: far from home. The trailer was released in January, when we only had concrete information End of Game were fan theories and dust in the wind. The first trailer seemed to be in the same vein as Back home: Less destruction of the world, more teenagers with a light heart.
But in light of End of GameThe end of spoiler-heavy, a rewatch of the Far from home The trailer teases a heavier story for Peter Parker, not just a light-hearted romp in Europe.
[[[[Ed. Note: This post contains major spoilers for Avengers: End of the game!]
First of all, we still do not know when this film will take place in the timeline of the MCU, or even if it takes place in the main reality. But until an official commentary by Kevin Feige himself is presented, we can only begin with what has slipped over the years of development of the sequel.
An interview of Fandom in 2017 with Amy Pascal, president of Sony, and Kevin Feige following Spider-Man: HomecomingThe release maintained that Spider-Man: far from home takes place after End of Game.
"What I think we should focus on is this spider-man who started in Civil war and then to this film, and then will be in the Avengers movie. And we start now the next one that will start a few minutes after Avengers 4 envelope like a story, "said Pascal. (And at a recent event in Shanghai, Feige said Far from home we "the end of the third phase", which explains how the film can be thematically connected to the MCU.)
If everyone tells the truth, we can assume: Spider-Man: far from homee takes place after the events of End of Gamein 2023 or later, when people affected by Decimation return to normal. The general idea is dark … but you do not get much out of the first blockbuster trailer.
Teasing begins with a charity celebration organized by Aunt May and Spider-Man. When the trailer debuted for the first time, we noticed that Stark Industries 'giant Happy Hogan check had Pepper Potts' signature on the sport instead of Tony. Of course, the CEO Pepper probably manages more everyday tasks of society than Tony, but we now know a small detail that now consolidates a long-term theory: Tony Stark is dead.
When the trailer jumps to the feet of the packing room, Peter hesitates to wear his suit and insists that all he wants to do is go on a trip with his friends, hit so much harder. Previously, it was like a typical adolescent behavior: high school ends, spend time with our friends before college!
We now know that this is not the case. Peter has just been eradicated, brought back five years later in the midst of an intense battle and has seen the death of a mentor and a father. It's heavy.
All the little things that Peter does – the persistent look on his suit, the way he shakes his head and closes the closet door – have an extra dimension. He is not a teenager who shirks his responsibilities for a pleasant vacation; It's a boy who has had a deeply traumatic experience and just wants to forget him. There is really no one around him who can understand the life of the hero, even if everyone is a little shocked after the decimation.
Even Peter's interactions with his friends are reconnected by End of Game. He seems almost cautious around them, especially with his crush on MJ (Zendaya). Remember that half of Peter's classmates are five years old and are currently finishing their studies. Of course, the magic of the movies means that the people with whom he is really friends are all caught off guard, but that does not wipe out the fact that this trip probably represents even more for everyone concerned. While they were wiped out of existence, half of their classmates grew up. If it's not a call to take a trip across Europe with friends who are not looking for work after graduation, I do not know what it is.
Then there are the hero stuff. If Peter is actively avoiding his role in dealing with his trauma and not just letting himself go as teenagers do, Nick Fury looking for him and reprimanding him for not stepping up seems a little hard. Again, this may be a call to action that Peter needs.
However, Happy Hogan's speech to Peter is more like the slight help he needs to return to the hero game. It is difficult to say where the speech fits into the more general context of the film, but it sounds resonant.
"You're all alone," Happy Hogan told him. "Your friends have problems. What are you going to do about it? "
We do not know what role Mysterio plays in this movie, but he first positioned himself as a hero who launches himself to save the world from big elemental monsters. With the loss of his tech-savvy mentor, it's no exaggeration to imagine Peter attaching himself to another hero – or considering him with particular disdain. The side eye that Peter gives his friend who describes Mysterio as "Iron Man and Thor Reunited in One" can be indicative of the grief he still feels. You can not just compare this stranger randomly to Iron Dad, recently deceased!
What used to be an inflatable trailer weighs heavier, almost as if humor concealed Peter's deep trauma. We are still looking for a second trailer and now that End of Game is in theaters, maybe the next preview of Spider-Man: far from home not afraid of the emotional impact.
Spider-Man: far from home was released on July 2nd.
