New York Knicks director and super-fan Spike Lee has slammed Madison Square Garden security for harassing Patrick Ewing, the Georgetown basketball coach who was involved in an incident earlier this week.
Ewing, a Knicks legend whose jersey hangs in the rafters of the world’s most famous arena, said he was “accosted” by security Thursday as he prepared to coach Georgetown in the Big East tournament.
Lee previously experienced similar issues with MSG security and escaped on ESPN First take that harassing Ewing in the garden was inexcusable. Lee’s incident occurred when he was asked to use another entrance to the arena instead of the employee’s entrance he claimed to have used for 28 years.
“I don’t blame it on [James] Dolan, ”said Lee, referring to the owner of the Knicks, Madison Square Garden Sports and Madison Square Garden Entertainment and executive chairman of MSG Networks. “There must be something wrong with Madison Square Garden. Can any of you imagine Derek Jeter being stopped from entering Yankee Stadium? Has Magic Johnson stopped entering Staples Center? Michael Jordan – the GOAT – being stopped from entering the United Center? WTF! “
Lee added: “The indignity, the disrespect, even though I’m a young child born after Patrick was with the Knicks’ glory years, he’s 7ft 2in tall!” Lee said. “And you tell me there’s no one around as Patrick goes through the metal detector to say, ‘Yo, you, it’s Patrick. Let him pass. How is it going? I do not understand. This will not happen at Yankee Stadium. There must be some common sense. “
Ewing isn’t the first Knicks star to fall out with the team. Former Ewing teammate Charles Oakley was forcibly removed from MSG in 2017 and arrested.
