Iconic filmmaker Spike Lee was honored by New York Film Critics Circle with a special award for his short film on Sunday New York, New York, which was filmed during the pandemic. After fellow filmmaker Martin Scorsese presented him with the award, Lee didn’t mince words during his acceptance speech which was pre-recorded on January 6, the day Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.

“It is a very sad day in the history of America,” Lee said of the siege on Capitol Hill.

He continued bluntly, “We’re at a crossroads now… and everyone, please be careful. This is not a game… This president, Agent Orange, will go down in history with Hitler. He added that the politicians who stood with Trump are “on the wrong side of history.”

Lee showed his gratitude for the New York Film Critics Circle award. He reflects on his career saying it was never just about him. He goes on to thank everyone who has helped him behind and in front of the camera since his years at NYU film school before going back and adding, “All of us, as real Americans, have to really think to what’s important. ”
