The National Board of Review chooses Spike Lee’s Da 5 bloods as Best Picture of 2020 on Tuesday, awarding the Netflix drama three total honors in its annual Best Picture of the Year vote. Lee won the award for best director and the film also won the ensemble award.

Chadwick Boseman was posthumously honored with the NBR Icon Award. He appeared in Da 5 bloods in one of his last roles alongside a cast that included Delroy Lindo, Isiah Whitlock Jr, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Jonathan Majors. The photo centers on a close-knit group of Vietnam veterans who return to find the remains of their fallen squad leader and the buried treasure they hid there.

Da 5 bloods is not only a unique portrayal of the experience and lingering trauma of Black Vietnam War veterans, but also a moving story of enduring friendship, a suspenseful jungle treasure hunt, and a powerful account with the dream American, ”said NBR President Annie Schulhof. “We are also honored to present the NBR Icon Award posthumously to Chadwick Boseman, an extraordinary talent who represented the best that an actor could be in any role.

Spirit Award nominations: ‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’, ‘Minari’, ‘Nomadland’ and ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Lead Field

This marks the second year in a row that NBR has awarded a Netflix movie its first prize. Last year he paid tribute to Martin Scorsese Irish before this photo, 10 Oscar nominations, including for best picture. The year before, the group picked the eventual Oscar winner for Best Picture Green book.

Ahmed Rice (Sound of metal) and Carey Mulligan (Promising young woman) won the awards for best actor and actress today. Sound of metal also won for Paul Raci in the supporting actor; other films with multiple winners included Threatening, which won the supporting actress for Youn Yuh-jun and for the original screenplay by Lee Isaac Chung.

Da 5 bloods now joins a list of photos on the hotlist thanks to the major groups of critics that have weighed in this awards season. The New York Film Critics Circle has previously named A24 First cow by Kelly Reichardt as her best picture, while the Los Angeles Film Critics Association voted the television anthology of Steve McQueen’s Amazon mini-film Small ax his best image.
