FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FLA. (WSVN) – A Spirit Airlines flight to South Florida has been grounded due to an engine emergency.

According to an airline statement on Saturday night, Atlantic City flight 3044 to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was about to take off when it “encountered what is believed to be a big bird “.

The bird allegedly flew in one of the plane’s engines.

The statement reads in part: “The captain safely braked and brought the aircraft to a stop, received an indication of engine damage, and ordered an evacuation in accordance with our standard procedures.”

The airline said everyone had left safely and all passengers were offered a flight on another plane.

The statement reads in part: “Our guests will receive a full refund, a future travel voucher, and the ability to fly to Fort Lauderdale on another plane tonight.”
