Splitgate was first published in 2019 and while it worked well at first, it quickly faded from the radar for most people. But earlier this year, the game made its leap to consoles and became a huge hit almost overnight. Now the developers, with more money and investors, are excited about the future and have big plans for the suddenly super popular Splitgate.
In an interview with Techcrunch September 14, 1047 Games co-founder and CEO Ian Proulx explained that after a few recent rounds of funding following by Splitgate success “The reach of what we can do is now through the roof. Before, in 2019, the team was struggling due to its small size and lack of resources.
“There are so many things we couldn’t think of because we were a small team on a tight budget, but now it’s all on the table,” explained Proulx. “We are focusing on the long term – I consider the game 25% over. We don’t need to be Fortnite tomorrow, but now it’s really about building the next Riot Games, the next big games company. “
Splitgate is a free online competitive shooting game that plays a lot like earthquake 3 or classic Halo, but with the added wrinkle of player-controlled portals. These portals allow for wild moments and crazy is playing. After launching on consoles in July, the game’s player base exploded, reaching over 2 million active players in two weeks. This led to some nasty server issues and 1047 games scrambled to keep up with the now huge player count.
After all this success, on September 14, 1047 Games announced that it had successfully lifted $ 100 million from a group of venture capitalists.
With that money, Proulx says the team can now focus only on creating the game they (and the community) want to create. He also added it’sSince 2019, a small group of players have stayed and provided feedback, and Proulx believes continuing to listen to players is the key to making Splitgate something bigger and better.
“We read everything, we are listening – continue to receive comments. We still function as the independent team that had to stay close to our community. We are still in this state of mind ”, said Proulx, “But now we just have a ridiculous amount of money.”
