Spotify is testing Snapchat-like stories for playlists

Spotify is testing a new Snapchat-style Stories feature alongside some of its playlists. On its Christmas Hits playlist, for example, a series of artists including Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson and Pentatonix use a series of short video clips to share personal anecdotes about the holiday season and their writing processes. Engadget notes that similar stories were spotted on the emo rap playlist Tear Drop and an album version of Megan Thee Stallion Good news.

Videos can be accessed from an icon at the top left of each supported playlist. Touching reveals an interface that will be familiar to anyone who has watched an Instagram or Snapchat story before, allowing you to tap left or right on the screen to browse a collection of short video clips.

Spotify confirmed the new feature in a statement provided to Engadget, but said it was a test and stopped before confirming a larger version. “At Spotify, we regularly run a number of tests to improve our user experience,” said a spokesperson. “Some of these tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others are just for important learning. We have no news to share on future projects at this time. “

Since their debut on Snapchat, stories have become an increasingly common sight on many social networks and other services. Instagram’s implementation of the format is one of the most well-known, but other services including YouTube, Twitter, and even LinkedIn have implemented versions of the feature. This isn’t even Spotify’s first test of stories, following an experiment with a feature called Storylines in 2019.
