Spotify tests place podcast episodes alongside music recommendations

Spotify is spending millions to become a major player in podcasting, and today we see how it could start promoting TV shows by placing suggested episodes in algorithmically generated playlists. A test seen by The edge Displays several short podcast episodes placed alongside custom music suggestions in a playlist for the reader to get to work. Spotify does not currently have a widely available podcast recommendation tool or podcast playlists. This seems to be a preview of what will happen.

This year, Spotify plans to spend $ 500 million on acquisitions related to the podcast industry. For now, she has purchased the podcast networks Gimlet Media and Parcast, as well as the Anchor creation and hosting platform, focused on podcasters. Few things have changed yet, but the company has hinted that what it plans to do with these entities: create advertising products, discover podcasts and create a collection of quality programming exclusive to Spotify. Today's test may well be one of the first public stages of this trip.

The playlist test was served to my colleague here at The edgeDan Seifert. It's called Your Daily Drive and offers a music chosen that matches its interests. Beside these songs, there were short news podcasts, apparently all in Portuguese, of which Dan does not speak. Podcasts were not made by Spotify.

An algorithmic playlist that goes through the music and podcasts recommendations is something I would expect to see at Spotify. Given the success of its Discover Weekly playlist, a similar feature, but with included podcasts, would make sense and potentially expose more than its 100 million subscribers to the world of podcasting.
