Instagram, Spotify and YouTube, for example, are all state-of-the-art modern Internet services, but they all have their roots in another era of analog technology. An artist has now imagined what these services would look like if they were really designed for that era, whether it's an Instagram-branded Polaroid camera, a Spotify cassette player, or a DVD player. VHS tapes featuring the colors of YouTube.
Ok, to be fair, the drawings of the conceptual artist Sheng Lam, noted by Kotaku earlier this week, do not technically name each of the services on which they are based, but it would be hard not to confuse SoundKloud for SoundCloud or YooTube for YouTube.
Lam's anime-style illustrations convince people of what Netflix and Twitter would have looked like in the pre-internet era. Netflix (ahem, sorry, Netflex) is of course a stocky CRT television, while Twitter (no, Tweeter) is a telegraph key used to send messages in Morse code.
If I had to bite, I would say that the importance given by SoundCloud to DIY music makes the service more suitable for a cassette player than Spotify, but the art is good enough for me to think it's get away with it.
