Spread of virus continues in Long Island, New York, state figures show

Long Island recorded 999 new cases and five deaths from COVID-19-related illness on Friday, a sign that New York State has entered a period of continued spread of the virus, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said on Saturday. .

“We are entering a difficult time of continued spread of COVID-19 in this state,” Cuomo said, urging New Yorkers to take individual responsibility to do their part to contain the virus.

The state’s overall infection rate was 3.98%, with a rate of 5.65% in micro-cluster areas and 3.45% outside of these locations, according to figures from the State.

The central New York area had the highest infection rate, at 8.4%, according to the figures.

The number of people hospitalized increased from 184 to 3,287, as did the number of people in intensive care, from 18 to 654, according to the figures. These intubated people increased from 37 to 331.

The state has recorded 42 deaths related to COVID-19, for a total of 26,632, according to the figures.

“It’s up to you, your neighborhood, and your community to slow the spread,” Cuomo said. “Our micro-cluster strategy can target very small areas with restrictions, so the actions each of us take and the actions our neighbors are taking may seem small, but they make a big difference.”

In Long Island, Nassau County recorded 462 new cases, for a total of 59,700. The county killed three people on Friday.

“Our collaborative aggressive testing efforts continued yesterday with 14,896 tests administered to residents of Nassau. Of those, 462 have tested positive, making the current positivity rate of 3.1% – lower than the current state average of 4%, ”County Director Laura Curran said.

Nassau’s 11 hospitals are currently hosting a total of 212 COVID patients – three fewer than the day before. Of those in hospital, 37 are in intensive care and 25 are on ventilators, Curran said on Saturday.

“I encourage everyone to do their holiday shopping at small businesses in their local communities this weekend as they struggle to survive with the impact of the pandemic – but please stay alert,” said Curran. “By continuing to follow the guidelines, we can keep the infection rate low and help keep these businesses and our schools open.”

Suffolk County has recorded 537 new cases for a total of 59,810, according to state figures. The county has had two deaths.

A total of 217 people have been hospitalized, an increase of 17, according to county figures.

Hospitals recorded 33 new admissions. Forty-seven people were in intensive care, an increase of 2, and 19 were intubated, according to county figures.

New York City had 1,589 new cases of the coronavirus, with a daily infection rate of 3.64%, on average over seven days, according to the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Cuomo noted that the state “has one of the lowest infection rates in the country and the highest screening capacity in the country, but it will take the vigilance of New Yorkers to get us through the holidays and this. pandemic”.
