Square Enix revealed on Friday Encounters in Dungeons, a new dungeon crawler led by Final Fantasy veteran Hiroyuki Ito, the director of Final fantasy 6, Final fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 12, and the creator of the franchise’s classic Active Time Battle system. Describing Ito’s new game as minimalist might underestimate it; players appear to go through grid-based mazes, are rewarded for mapping them, and occasionally fall into menu-based battles against monsters. Encounters in DungeonsThe first trailer is confusing and perhaps a little overwhelming for fans of Ito’s past work – but I still have hope.
In addition to Ito, Final Fantasy 12: Age of the Zodiac producer Hiroaki Kato – who also worked on Ogre Tactics: Hold On Together and two Final Fantasy Tactics games for Square Enix – are also working on the game. Music director Nobuo Uematsu “oversees” the soundtrack, and Dungeon Encounters features character art by designer Ryoma Ito, whose talents are on display here.
While it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of the game’s characters as 2D static illustrations, there’s a big cat named Sir Cat and a dachshund with a sword in its mouth named Jufren, and I already want to hang out with it. them.
Beyond that, Square Enix promises “100 levels of stimulating challenges”, so I’m getting closer Encounters in Dungeons from the point of view of “it looks like a good puzzle game, not something on a real budget” and hoping for the best.
Encounters in Dungeons will be available digitally for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via Steam on October 14. The game will cost $ 29.99, but is currently reduced to $ 23.99 for pre-orders.
