Startup Payments Square plans to hire a number of engineers and a designer to work on its cryptography initiatives, according to tweets from CEO Jack Dorsey.
Dorsey, who also founded and operates Twitter, announced Wednesday night Square plans to hire three or four engineers and a designer "to work full time on open source contributions to the bitcoin / crypto ecosystem." A spokesperson for Square said that there was no additional information to share beyond the tweets.
Perhaps more particularly, these new employees have the opportunity to be paid in bitcoins, said Dorsey.
All work will be open-source and, according to Dorsey, new employees will not focus on Square's business interests, but rather on "on what is best for the crypto community. "
Dorsey has long been a supporter of bitcoin. He repeatedly said he hoped Bitcoin would become the single currency of the Internet and the world in the distant future.
In Wednesday's tweet thread, Dorsey added the improvement of the cryptographic ecosystem seems to be "the most powerful thing" that Square can do for the community, goes on to say:

Square Cash App already supports purchases and sales of bitcoins. Dorsey previously announced plans to support the Lightning Network, a Layer 2 solution to facilitate small and fast transactions.
